How to find out your Wi-Fi password on your Android phone
As you know, modern phones can be connected to the Internet without any problems. This allows you to watch videos or movies, install various programs, communicate in messengers, and so on. There are plenty of options for using the useful feature, and you have known about them for a long time. Connecting to an available hotspot is quite easy. All you have to do is enter the security code from the network. But sometimes at this stage there is a similar question: and how to find out your password from Wi-Fi on the Android phone. The answer is to use one of the ways, which will be presented below. A little spoiler: it can be done with or without root rights.
As mentioned above, there are a lot of ways to find out your Wi-Fi password. If you don't have root rights on your phone, the number of ways is significantly reduced. But even in this case, you can get the coveted combination through the router settings. In general, we will tell you about each effective method in detail below.
Without ROOT rights
On a modern Android phone it is quite difficult to install root rights, and even more so to make sure that the device works properly. That's why the method without root rights is suitable for everyone. You don't have to do anything extra, all you have to do is go into the router's settings and look up the password.
In almost every case a standard address is used: 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1. But depending on the router model the combination of numbers can be different. We recommend that you pay attention to the router case or its package. There is usually a sticker with the address to enter the administrator panel. Enter these numbers into the search field of any browser and go to the page.
Here we authorize in the personal cabinet by entering the username and access code. It should be noted that almost always a standard combination is used: login - admin, password - admin. However, if you have previously changed these data, you will have to remember them. In our case we had to go to 192.168.31.1 which is suitable for logging into the administrator panel of the Xiaomi router. The system immediately prompted Install the Mi Wi-Fi app. Well, let's do that:
Open Play Market and enter the program name.
Go to the page with it and click on "Install". Note that in Google Play you can find applications for other router models as well. For example, for TP-Link.
Launch the utility and select "Agree and continue".
The system automatically finds the network name and suggests pairing.
Enter the data from the admin panel and perform authorization.
And then we do the following steps:
Open tab "Settings".
Go to "Wi-Fi settings". Depending on the router model, you may need to go to the menu named "Wireless mode" or "Wireless".
Here we find the right access point. In our case there are two: one for 2.4G and one for 5G Wi-Fi.
Near the item "Password"Click on the eye icon and see the coveted combination of numbers and symbols.
The password from the Wi-Fi network will be used to connect to the selected access point. We advise you to write it down or remember it, so that in the future you don't have to go back to the router settings. Agree that this method is really universal, and the main thing is that you can use it even on your computer!
Through ROOT rights
Do you already have root rights installed on your smartphone? Then that's just great! You can use absolutely any method to find the access code from Wi-Fi. The most standard method involves the use of a file manager, but not the usual one, but one with advanced functionality. You can pay attention to Total File Commander or ES File Explorer.
We will consider working with the proven Root Browser program. Here's a quick tutorial that will work for any full-access file manager:
Open the file manager and go to the root directory. It is usually already displayed by default.
Find the folder "Data" and enter it.
Go to the directory "misk".
Open the folder "wifi"and among the huge number of different documents look for the file "wpa_supplicant_conf".
Click on it and among the suggested programs to open, choose any available text editor.
In the structured list, we see the name of access points to which the phone once connected. Among them we find the desired network and in the line "psk" view the password. It can be copied by holding your finger on the item and selecting "Copy".
In this simple way we managed to get the access code from a particular Wi-Fi network. From the advantages of this method we would like to note the simplicity of actions. It is enough to install an Explorer with advanced functionality on your Android phone, find the desired folder and open the file. And then with the received data you can easily connect to the access point. Probably, this option would be universal if it worked without superuser rights at all.
Via "WI-FI hotspot settings"
Suppose you decide to distribute the internet from your phone to other users. You created a hotspot, set it up correctly, but you don't remember the password to connect. What to do in this situation? In principle, there is nothing difficult. It is enough to go to the settings of Internet sharing mode and find out the password from the Wi-Fi. How to do this correctly is described in detail in the instructions:
Open the phone settings.
Go to "Connection and sharing". Note that all names may vary depending on the smartphone model.
Go to the tab "Wi-Fi hotspot".
Click on "Access point settings".
And near the field "Password"Click on the familiar icon of an eye.
In the corresponding column you will immediately see the combination of numbers and symbols that you need to connect to the created access point. Tell other people the data you have received so that they can use your Internet without any problems.
Of course, this method does not help to find out the password from your home Wi-Fi, but there is one very interesting feature. If you have never changed the settings of the access point, and in general never used it, then in the field with the default password may be the access code from the most commonly used Wi-Fi. We recommend to check this assumption, it is possible that on your smartphone this principle works!
Third-party apps for Android
In the Play Store, you can find a huge number of applications that supposedly allow you to get the password from the connected Wi-Fi. But some of these programs just don't work, and some of them seem to find the network access code, but in the end it turns out to be wrong. We have prepared a selection of the best utilities, but they all require root rights on the smartphone. Simply put, such programs replace the explorer from the previous method. There you had to do everything manually, but here the process is automated.
Let's start with WiFi Password Recovery. From the name you can already guess its purpose. Everything is simple here: the utility collects the data saved in the phone and then outputs them in the format of a structured and accurate list. The application contains a sufficient amount of advertising, which does not interfere with the comfort of working with the software. So, here is a step-by-step instruction for finding a Wi-Fi password:
Start the program and wait for the initial settings to be made. This usually takes a few seconds.
Provide access to the location as well as the file system of the device.
Open tab "Scanned WiFi"and here you see the names of the networks that you previously tried to connect to.
If you are already connected to a certain access point, the icon "Show PWD".
As you have already guessed, you need to click on this icon and view the key to the Wi-Fi. The long-awaited combination will appear in the "PASS".
The application interface is simple and straightforward, so it won't be hard to understand it. You might be wondering what the first tab is for "Saved WiFi"? And it is used to recover old passwords. Suppose that you used to connect to a certain access point a long time ago, but now you don't remember the key to it. In this case, go to "Saved WiFi"and start the scanning procedure. The program will detect access points and give you their passwords.
The program WiFi Key Recovery is known to many users because it appeared a relatively long time ago. But even after many years, the application copes with its task perfectly. The essence of the work of the utility does not differ from the previous version. After launching it automatically collects all the data, and then a list of available networks and passwords is generated. It is clear that in this case you can't do without root access.
For clarity, here is a step-by-step guide to working with the program:
Install the application from Google Play.
Open the utility and provide the requested permissions.
On the main screen you can see a list of detected networks. To search for a particular access point, you can enter its name in the "Quicksearch SSID".
Select the desired Wi-Fi and in the field "PSK" we see the password. The security level of the network can also be specified here.
That's all, you do not need to do anything else. To copy the access code, click on the desired Wi-Fi, and then in the menu that appears, select "Copy Password". You can also create a QR-code to connect by clicking on "Show QR Code". It will be enough to scan it with another phone and then join the network.
By the way, you can read about scanning QR codes here.
You can also use the free WiFi Pass Recovery app to get your Wi-Fi password. You can install it from Google Play in the standard way. In principle, all the programs in our selection work according to the same algorithm. Due to the presence of superuser rights they access the file system of the smartphone, and from there they get the data from Wi-Fi. But still, for clarity, we propose to consider the instructions and for the application WiFi Pass Recovery:
Run the utility and provide the requested permissions.
Wait for the program to detect all available networks.
Click on the name of the desired access point.
In the column "SSID" we see the name of the Wi-Fi, and just below in the field "PSK" and the password.
You can copy the access code and use it to connect.
In the settings of the program you can automatically activate the search for new networks, as well as change the time interval. In general, the program is standard, so there is not much to say about it. And if you don't have root rights on your phone, don't even try to use the presented applications. It won't work.
Do you use a smartphone with a modern version of Android? Great, then you can share the password from the connected Wi-Fi network with another person without installing additional applications, and most importantly - completely without root rights. All actions will be performed through the smartphone settings, so let's move on to the instructions for different devices.
So, on the Xiaomi phone, the necessary tab is located on the main settings page. But we still recommend to pay attention to the step-by-step instructions:
Open the settings and go to "Wi-Fi".
Click on the name of the connected network.
In the window that appears, we see the cherished QR-code.
The other person only has to launch the scanner on his smartphone, point the camera at the code, and then scan it. The connection to the selected Wi-Fi access point will be made automatically.
On Samsung Galaxy
Owners of Samsung smartphones can also use the handy option. In this case, the procedure differs slightly, but if there are unknown problems, use the detailed guide:
Go to settings and open the tab "Connections".
Click on "Wi-Fi".
Click on the connected network for a QR code to appear on the screen.
However, on older models of phones it may not be possible to view the QR-code through the settings. What to do in this case, will not be able to share the Internet? No, you can use a special site or application to generate a connection code.
You will need to enter the name of the access point (SSID), password and encryption type in a special field. Then click on the button "Show Barcode" and download the created QR-code. You can even print it out so that you can use it later to quickly connect to the Internet.
By the way, how to connect a printer to the phone is explained in here.
On Huawei (Honor)
Do you use a phone from the manufacturer Huawei or Honor? Then you can also create a QR code to connect to the Internet. A step-by-step instruction will help you to do everything correctly:
Open the settings.
Go to "Wireless networks".
Click on "Wi-Fi".
Find the connected network and click on its name.
A QR code appears on the screen.
The resulting code cannot be saved on your phone in image format. But you can make a screenshot of the screen.
Answers to popular questions
Q: How do I change the Wi-Fi key on my Android? You need to go to the router settings, open the tab "Wireless mode" and in the "Password" field change the specified combination. We remind you that the minimum length of the access code is 8 characters. It must consist of letters, numbers and sometimes special characters. Try to think of a strong key so that it is difficult to crack.
Q: Can I get the network password without root rights through the app? No, all apps require superuser privileges on your smartphone. And ordinary applications running on any phone almost always display the wrong access code. We recommend that instead of using additional utilities, you just go to the router's settings and look up the password there.
Q: How do I change my access point password? Go to the smartphone settings, open the "Connection and sharing" tab and click on "Access point settings". Find the column "Password", delete all the characters, and then enter a new access code. Save the changes by clicking on the checkbox in the corner of the screen.
Agree that finding out your password from Wi-Fi on Android is not difficult, if you have access to the router settings. In other cases, you'll have to use workarounds, where you can't do without root rights!
